Merlin had a small skateboard for physical therapy that was lost in the fire. It is possible to have another one fabricated, but we need resources for that. If you have any ideas or want to contribute, let us know!
Orthotics are not an option for Merlin, so we want to keep his legs as strong as possible. Hydrotherapy, laser therapy and others will help with arthritis, muscle atrophy, strength and coordination. Despite his disability, this little guy can get around pretty well. He can get on all fours to walk or run – especially when chasing a cat toy! He also pulls himself around with his 'elbows' to scoot when he is not walking. Merlin was the first cat to run to safety the morning of the sanctuary fire. The little guy was only a few feet from the huge blazes when LuAnn entered the room. He ran faster-than-ever-before and jumped to the safety of her arms! It is an image that is forever seared into her memory. |
Merlin is our delightful young kitty born with no paws. He is one of the happiest little guys ever! He loves to play, run and jump with the other ‘big kids’ and hide in his secret tunnel where he thinks nobody can see him;-)
Merlin (aka Muffin) was about 18-months-old when he moved to Colorado all the way from Wisconsin! He was not used to being touched and could easily become overstimulated. Without paws to defend himself, Merlin has to use his only other means of defense when he feels unsafe – biting – hard! It has taken a long time to learn how to interact safely with Merlin. With lots of trial and error, he has learned to accept some petting and gives and receive kisses occasionally, Merlin loves to get ear rubs since he can't scratch his own ears. This is a ritual both he and LuAnn look forward to each morning and evening<3 He still gets pretty reactive if his back nubs are touched, but we are working on that. And, he pulls out his hair when he gets overwhelmed. Day by day, those behaviors are improving - he is a spectacular little guy<3 |
